A thug attacked three women with a hammer at an upmarket London hotel, leaving one fighting for her life.

The victims were brutally battered in a room at the four-star Cumberland Hotel, yards from shoppers’ paradise Oxford Street, before the attacker fled the scene.

The three women, all aged in their 30s, were taken to central London hospitals with head injuries after the assault in the early hours of this morning.

The most severely injured woman was tonight critical in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Another victim was in a serious but stable condition while the third guest was described as stable.

A source said: “They were attacked with a hammer.

“The most badly injured is not expected to survive.”

The attack is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police murder investigation team. which is attached to the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

A police spokesman said: “We were called out at 1.50am to a report of an assault on three women at a hotel in W1.

“Victim one is critical while victim two is serious but stable and victim three is in a stable condition.

“There have been no arrests and the inquiry is ongoing.”

The spokesman said detectives were trying to find out if the attacker was known to the victims.

London Ambulance Service sent an emergency first responder, a car and three ambulances after being called at 1.45am.

A spokeswoman said: “We were called to a report of an assault at Great Cumberland Place.

“We treated three female patients who were taken to hospital as priorities.”

The hotel, with rooms starting from £140 a night, is near some of London’s finest restaurants and bars as well as tourist hotspots like Hyde Park and Marble Arch.

It has 1,000 luxury rooms including the Jimi Hendrix Suite, named after the guitar legend who often used to stay at the plush venue.

A spokesman for Guoman Hotels, which runs the Cumberland, said: “We are very concerned about the people who were injured and are doing everything we can to help the police with their enquiries.”

Three female tourists have suffered serious head injuries in a hammer attack at one of London’s biggest and busiest hotels.

One of the women was fighting for her life after the assault in a room at the 1,000-room Cumberland Hotel in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The other two women were last night said to be too traumatised to speak  to detectives.

All three victims – said to be wealthy tourists from the Middle East – were taken to hospital with severe head injuries.

Emergency services were called to the four-star hotel, near the retail paradise of Oxford Street, just before 2am yesterday. The women, who are in their thirties, had travelled to London for a shopping spree from their home in the United Arab Emirates.

It is not known if the victims knew their attacker and the assault is believed to have taken place in a room at the hotel.

The most seriously injured woman has been put into a medically induced coma by surgeons in a bid to stabilise her condition.

One line of inquiry is that the assault came after a bungled robbery by an opportunist thief. Scotland Yard has launched a nationwide manhunt to trace the attacker, who was not a guest at the hotel.

Detectives have retrieved CCTV footage and are questioning staff and other guests. A spokesman for the hotel said everything has returned to normal at the Cumberland following the incident.

He said: ‘It’s an ongoing investigation and we are helping police with their inquiries in order to get this sorted as soon as possible.’

The Metropolitan Police said homicide and major crime officers were investigating the incident. The area surrounding the hotel, near Marble Arch, is popular with tourists from the Middle East.

Prices for a night at the Cumberland Hotel range from £142 for a single room to £316 for the junior king suite with breakfast and dinner included.

The hotel’s website boasts of its ‘cutting edge contemporary design’ in the heart of London ‘where Oxford Street meets Park Lane’.

It adds: ‘The spectacular, spacious lobby creates a striking first impression with contemporary, original art and lighting. Every feature is beautifully considered at this iconic Hyde Park hotel, from the unique Jimi Hendrix Suite to London’s finest restaurants and bars.’

Is this an article about the brutal attack or is this an ad for the hotel? So badly written and shows no sympathy for the victims. What does “The spectacular, spacious lobby ” have to do with the crime???
